The Ilisu dam is a 1,200 MW hydroelectric project located on the Tigris river in southeast Turkey. If proceeded, the dam will flood the historic town of Hasankeyf, one of the oldest continually inhabited places in the world. In July 2009 a consortium of European banks already backed out of the project because the dam would not meet World Bank environmental and cultural preservation standards. Still, Turkish banks Akbank, Garantibank and Halkbank continue to finance the project. Profundo analysed the shareholders and strategic partners of these Turkish banks. A major role is played by American bank Citigroup, which owns 20 per cent of Akbank's shares, and Spanish bank BBVA, which owns 24.9 per cent of Garantibank's shares. Both banks, through these strategic partnerships, have a major influence on the actions of the Turkish banks, and thus on the Ilisu dam project.
