">JobsCoal is an energysource which - now the oil'prices have reached historical heights - came into the vogue again. Due the high emission of CO2, both industrialized and developing countries are building new coal power stations. Besides the combustion of coal, the gathering of coal is also polluting the air, water and earth. While the gathering itself creates social problems as well. Enormous daily mines expell the local community from their land and take away their existing possibilities. The mineworkers often have to deal with dangerous labour circumstances, low wages and a lack of labour and organizations rights.
Profundo tries to get insight in the coal production chain and researches which financial institutions are involved with the financing of new mines and coal power stations. Profundo also supports local NGO's with the development of international campaigns to, through financers and clients, influence mining companies.

This study examines commercial banks' lending for the coal industry and provides the first comprehensive climate ranking for financial institutions. The portfolios of 93 of the world's leading banks were examined to look into their support for 31 major coal-mining companies (representing 44% of global coal production) and 40 producers of coal-fired electricity (which together own over 50% of global coal-fired generation capacity). The total value of coal financing provided by these banks since 2005 (the year the Kyoto Protocol came into force) amounts to 232 billion Euro.
gg
The study identifies the top twenty "climate killers" in the banking world. Among the top twenty are banks from the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Switzerland, China, Italy and Japan. The top three banks fuelling climate change worldwide are JP Morgan Chase (EUR 16,5 bln), Citi (EUR 13,7 bln) and Bank of America (EUR 12,6 bln). |

Energy company DKRW Energy and coal mining company Arch Coal, both from the US, have established a joint venture to build a coal-to-liquids plant in Wyoming. Eskom is a major South African state-owned energy company that is currently constructing two new coal-fired power plants in South Africa: Medupi and Kusile. For the Kusile power plant, Eskom still needs around US$ 17 million, and it is uncertain which parties close this funding gap.
